West Scarborough Neighbourhood Community Centre offers different programs and services to different age groups. It gives information about the Family Resource Services at Ontario Early Year's Centres. This service provides learning programs for children, parenting programs to caregivers, information about pregnancy, and outreach activities to all parents with young children.

The West Scarborough Neighbourhood Community Centre offers information about Youth Justice Services. Any teens at risk of showing criminal behaviour can become part of the Extra Judicial Sanctions Program and The Scarborough Youth Justice Committee. The West Scarborough Neighbourhood Community Centre provides a program called West Scarborough Aquatics, which teaches people how to swim and educates them on fitness and wellness. It's available to all ages. Not only will this program teach you how to swim, it will teach you water safety, injury prevention and First Aid. Local Person: Rob Porter

Rob Porter is the chef from The Green Room Restaurant. He was born and raised in Scarborough. Before he opened The Green Room Restaurant in October 2006, he worked for Michelin restaurants. He has a team of first-rate chefs that a lot of experience and are qualified to be chefs. His team is friendly and knowledgeable about the food their working with. Porter loves to attend Food Festivals. He's even entered in some of them. For example, he's entered the Ryedale Food Festival, York Food Festival, Bridlington Food Festival, and Scarborough's SeaFest. Recently, Porter has demonstrated his cooking skills at The Malton Food Lovers Market. He made a Sea Bass dish with parsnip Porridge and Mulled Wine foam. Today, his main goal is to promote chefs and restaurants from Scarborough. The next big festival Porter has been invited to is the Dales Food Festival, which will be held in May 2013.

News Story: Update on Ricardo Vincent Murder Case

On June 22, 2012 a man named Ricardo Vincent was shot near Kennedy and Ellesmere road in Scarborough on Glamorgan Avenue. Recently, Orville Campbell and Stanton David have been charged with first-degree murder of Ricardo Vincent. The murder happened during the day-time and it had over 40 witnesses. Even children witnessed the murder at nearby playground. Not only were these men charges but they were also arrested. Police investigated this case very thoroughly. Detective Justin Vander Heyden believed that these two men were visiting the area often and scaring witnesses from going to the police. The community wanted to feel safe again, so some witnesses went to the police.  They interview friends, family, and witnesses. They searched cars and houses. They even watched surveillance footage over and over again to find the murderers. Police also found out that the reason Ricardo Vincent got shot was because he had an ongoing dispute with Orville Campbell and Stanton David.

Local Issue: Transportation

  

   

Transportation is a local problem/issue in Scarborough. The citizens of Scarborough would like a subway here to make it easier to travel to school and work.  The only problem with this is that Mayor Rob Ford is trying to use the $47 billion infrastructure budget to create more subway stations downtown. His brother, Councillor Doug Ford proposed a plan to build train stations or subways along Sheppard and Eglinton Avenue, but his plan got rejected. The Ford Subway plan has be roaming the internet for awhile now. It appears that the plan was started in 2001. It is now 2013 and the goal was have the transit expansion completed by 2015. They are still planning to expand subways from The Scarborough Town Centre to Don Mills and another subway line from Shepphard-Yonge to Downsview. Doug Ford will continue to fight for a subway for Scarborough. He doesn’t even mind if the city is trying to build more stations downtown. He just doesn’t want Scarborough to be ignored.

Local Attraction: Scarborough Town Centre

One local attraction is the Scarborough Town Centre. The Scarborough Town centre is a shopping centre in Scarborough. It opened on May 2, 1973 with 130 new stores. In 1985, it became part of the Toronto Transit Commission. It currently has over 250 stores. This mall has clothing stores, movies and music stores, books stores, and a huge food-court. It includes something for everyone. For example, it has a Wal-Mart and a Dollarama, which means people can buy stuff at a cheaper cost. It also has Urban Planet and Forever 21 for people that want to buy more expensive clothing. This mall also features a theatre and entertainment complex, so there are a lot of fun things to do at this mall. The mall is located near the 401 highway, so people can have easy access to the place.

History of Scarborough

Originally, Scarborough was named Glasgow. In 1793, a woman by the name of Elizabeth Simcoe thought that Glasgow looked very similar to Scarborough in England. In 1796, her husband, Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe decided to officially change the name of Glasgow to Scarborough. By 1850, Scarborough population grew to 3800 and it became farming community. In 1867, new road, post offices, churches, markets, stores, schools and villages started to appear. Scarborough became a town. In 1983 it became a city and by 1997 it became a part of the City of Toronto.
