History of Scarborough
Originally,
Scarborough was named Glasgow. In 1793, a woman by the name of Elizabeth Simcoe
thought that Glasgow looked very similar to Scarborough in England. In 1796, her
husband, Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe decided to officially change
the name of Glasgow to Scarborough. By 1850, Scarborough population grew to
3800 and it became farming community. In 1867, new road, post offices,
churches, markets, stores, schools and villages started to appear. Scarborough
became a town. In 1983 it became a city and by 1997 it became a part of the
City of Toronto.
